Where the destinies of the world have been written

The history of Italy is linked to Western culture, to the history of Europe and the civilisations of the Mediterranean sea, lived the main historical events of the Western world. Italy has inherited ancient cultures such as of the nuraghic, the Etruscans or the Latins, was place of colonies of Greek and Carthaginian origin, of Celtic settlements and cradle of some phenomena that have marked western culture as the Roman Empire and the papacy after being under the domination of Goths, Longobardi, Arabs, Byzantines and Normans. During the Middle Age Italy remained fragmented in a mosaic of city-states that fought among them for the hegemony on the Mediterranean basin, with frequent interventions of surrounding powers and of the Catholic Church. Thanks to the geographic position Italy, became the key to the European trade and this favored the maritime Republics as Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa and Venice. The Spiritual Power of the pope, whose seat is in Rome, produced special repercussions in Italy.
This heritage of political importance has attracted power struggles among the rulers of all Europe. In addition, the classical cultural heritage and ecclesiastical was the land of a culture of new trends. After the experience of Municipalities and of the Lordships, in the 15th century and 16th century, Italy has become the cultural center of Europe, giving life to Humanism and the Renaissance.
At the same time, it became one of the fields of Battle of the continent, undergoing the hegemony of different foreign powers including France of Charles VIII and the Spanish Empire.
The dense and millenary historical events on the Italian ground have left indelible traces in art, in cities, in the culture, in the languages of Europe and much of the current world.
